Chapter One: Discovery

Jim discovered something in the human race that affected the consciousness of the entire population; nanoparticles of the heavy metal, magnetite, collecting in the cerebellum.

He found it first in himself after recognizing something unusual in the cognition of his host body.

Then he found it distributed throughout the bodies of the Earth’s human population.

Chapter Two: Hypothesis

Consciousness is essentially an electromagnetic phenomenon. Jim theorized that the element at work in the cognitive process of human-beings were nanoparticles of magnetite, that had bonded to the brain forming a strong link, connecting each person to its magnetic field and through that to each other, creating a field of cynergy not un-like the Collective.

Chapter Three: Testing

Jim used the resources at his command to build a laboratory for his research, he hid it from the Continuum.

He made replicants of his own body, testing his theories on those golems. He replicated his consciousness in them and used their agency to conceal all his covert activities, his clandestine ambitions against the Continuum.

Chapter Four: Proof

He found it, a mutation that captured nanoparticles of magnetite in the cerebral cortex, a concentration strong enough to allow for a cognitive connection between all human beings via Earth’s magnetic field. The mutation had been devised by the Ancient people on their way to Earth, its interaction with magnetite had not been intentional, nevertheless…

Chapter Five: Planning

Jim intended to introduce change into the genetic profile of each tribe at the same time, to monitor the effects and breed the traits he was looking for. He wanted to optimize the retention of nanoparticles retained in the cognitive structures of the brain, making each person a receptive node in the field of consciousness

Chapter Six: Creating

Jim created physical markers that would manifest themselves in the characteristics of the gene-pool he was developing. Every tribe had many markers, they guided him. They helped him map his progress, to his signal goal the birth of a human being with a mind powerful enough to harness the fullness of humanity and channel it.

Chapter Seven: Resolution

Jim determined to plum the limits of his discovery. He cloned himself, planting them in every population center around the world, each one connected to the prime version of himself through the cynergenic field. He did this in violation of the laws governing his post, “The Colonel is my benefactor,” I said, which was a true a statement as any, though some might consider it to be an embellishment.

If he had been discovered he would have been destroyed.

Chapter Five: Desire

The bonds between people, even members of the same family were flimsy, they were unreliable, but some were stronger than others.

People found one another through the things they desired most, bonding with one another through their joy and pain, they gravitated toward the same places. They were even shepherded to those places, to encounter one another through the ever-watchful eyes of the Continuum.

There was an element of contrivance behind even seemingly random encounters, the manipulations behind them were so fine and remote that the individuals involved in them had no ability to detect them.

They were cultivated for the drama they would deliver to the Collective.

Shared experiences were the strongest ties, and because of this people unconsciously sabotaged themselves, undercut their hopes for advancement, so that they could remain in proximity to those they loved.

They sacrificed their health, their freedom, their future for fleeting moments of pleasure, temporalities that were gone and forgotten as quickly as they came.

Through this medium, incredible tragedies would unfold, as ephemeral as the petals of a flower opening in the moonlight when there is no one there to witness.

Children would destroy their parents.

Brother and sisters would plot against each other.

Parents would sell their children, would devour them to satisfy their hunger for the thing they desired.

Desire would lead a person to walk with open eyes, through the gates of hell, embracing their own destruction.

The Collective thirsted for it, and the Continuum delivered.
