Run on Your Strength
Not by Undermining Your Opponent
The primary season is just getting and the field is not yet set.

Democratic Party politics is much different now than it was four years ago, the race t be the party’s nominee for president in 2020 is wide open. There are more than a dozen candidates that have jumped in, and a few more who are expected to announce soon.

In the last cycle HRC had all of the structural support locked up, and though BS ran a campaign that made her have to work, her victory was never in doubt, not to me at least, not to most observers, though it was to some self-deluded folks and even though there numbers might be in the tens of thousands they are still just a tiny minority of the voters who participated in the caucuses and primaries.

It seems however, that there bitterness at having lost has not gone away. The BS campaign fizzled out. And the principle eventually endorsed his opponent, though many of his followers opted to resist until the very end, they eagerly pushed all the rightwing and Russian propaganda that was trolling HRC, they refused to support her or even vote for her many even went over to cast ballots for Jill Stein, a Russian stooge, a useful idiot of Vladimir Putin’s.

BS is running again. He never released his taxes, he promised he would but he still hasn’t. He has broken other promises as well. In the last election cycle he gave up his status as an Independent when he sought the nomination of the Democratic Party, he said he would remain with the party but then, in 2018 he ran for his Senate seat in Vermont as an Independent again.

Now he is singing the same old song.

The BS team is different this time, it is as if they were still riding high on their “almost-won” campaign from 2016. They are acting much like HRC did, BS and his campaign staff, his surrogates and supporters, they are acting as if BS should be anointed and they are running down candidates who they feel might be a threat to them; Beto O’Rourke, the latest with Joe Biden, they are poisoning the well.

I say let things shake out with positive campaigning and no dirty tricks; the dirty tricks are disqualifying. The Democratic Party needs unity. We need to win the house, we need to win the Senate, we need to expand our hold on congress, and in state houses across the nation.
We need to win if we hope to get the plethora of Constitutional amendments that candidates are proposing passed, but more importantly, we need to win if want to control redistricting, and the upcoming apportionment of congressional districts.

There cannot be any Green new deal litmus tests, nothing of the sort, democrats need to support democrats in districts where they can win, there cannot be any ugly and divisive purity tests, and primary challenges, anyone who thinks that is a good idea needs to sit down.

I’m not of BS, I think he is a ridiculous candidate with a vision for America, that would be good if it could obtain, but for which there is not a broad enough constituency to pass. He is enamored with his good ideas, and that makes him a dangerous man.

I don’t want Joe Biden in the race either, Or Elizabeth Warren, let the old guard stand down, but if the win the hearts and minds of the voters then they have my vote and that is that, I’ll even vote for BS.

Russia is Threatening Nuclear War – Editorial, The Week in Review

Russia is Threatening Nuclear War

Vladimir Putin issued another threat.

He suggested the United States and Russia might reengage in another missile crises. He threatened to use his warships and submarines to position his new “hypersonic” missiles off our coast.

Many analysts have stated that Russia has no such weapons, but any repositioning of their arsenal off our coast, and any targeting of American cities with nuclear missiles is dangerous.

Putin was nonchalant, as if he was playing a game, boasting and issuing a mild bluff. Justifying these threats on the grounds that Trump has unilaterally pulled out of the INF treaty, but nuclear war is no joke.

It’s a motherfucker.

How did we get to this place where the President of Russia is playing coy with threats of a nuclear holocaust.

We are here because our own president is weak, compromised, and so intellectually stunted that he does not understand the stakes.

The anticipation is that the Trump administration is going to recognize the legitimacy of North Korea as a nuclear state; a total capitulation to their interests and a complete abandonment of our long term objective to de-nuclearize the Korean peninsula.

The Trump administration is under investigation for a plan to illegally transfer nuclear technology to Saudi Arabia.

These policy, glibly put forward by T-Rump, reluctantly enacted by his regime, against the recommendations of our national intelligence services, represent a long term threat to the republic, and an existential threat to human civilization.

The sad thing is that most Americans no longer care. They are not connected to the reality of these dangers; either because they do not remember the Cold War, or they do not understand it.
How can you get the generations that have come along after mine to get it?

These generations struggle with the concept of the spherical globe. They are liable to believing claims that the earth is flat, or that it is only six thousand years old. What can we do when so many millions of them do not have the critical thinking skills to appreciate the danger.

These are not insignificant developments.

Leadership – Editorial, The Week in Review

Leadership
T-Rump was forced to put some sanctions on the Russians when he first took office.

We had to punish them for the Invasion of Ukraine, the illegal annexation of Crimea, and interfering in the 206 Presidential Election.

T-Rump didn’t want to do it. He has business with the Russian’s. He does not care a tiddle about what is taking place in Ukraine, and the Russians interfered in the election to help him win

Trump did not want to punish them, not one little bit.

Do you remember when Mitt Romney complained that Barrack Obama was being naïve because he would not recognize Russia as a grave geo-political threat. Obama, who was President at the time, only considered them to be a minor regional player, albeit, with a whole lot of nuclear missiles.

I was with Obama at the time, I thought he had the sense of things, but Russia’s campaign in the United States caused us to have to reevaluate the extent of their reach.

Mitt Romney, Senator Mitt Romney now, he never quit complaining about that faux pas.

T-rump did not want to sanction the Russians, but a sanctions bill passed anyway, with veto proof majorities in both houses. Even the republican Congress of 2017 had the sense to do what was right.

Then some time passed, there was another election, T-Rump decided to ease some of those sanctions on his own.

Eleven Republican senators joined with the Democrats to say no. Mitt Romney, the newly elected senator from Utah was not one of them.

Old Willard has been pretending that he would be one of those responsible Republicans who would stand up to Trump, but this week, when it came time to stand up to him in relation to our biggest geo-political foe.

That is what passes for leadership among Republicans today.

Blame It On the World – Editorial, The Week in Review

Analysis, Commentary, Opinion

Blame It On the World
“Blame it on the world,” the fake President said, in reference to the murder of a journalist, a man who wrote for the Washington Post, a newspaper the fake president has decried as a purveyor of fake news, which according to the fake president’s rhetoric makes them the enemy of the people.

“Blame it on the world, the world is a nasty vicious place,” the fake President said, about the murder of this man who lived in Virginia, who was a permanent resident of the United States, who was lured to Turkey, by the government of Saudi Arabia on the grounds that he needed to visit the consulate there to acquire the paperwork that would allow him to marry.

Mr. Khashoggi was a citizen of Saudi Arabia, and a vocal critic of the House of Saud, the Crown Prince, his government and their horrible record of human rights abuse.

The Crown Price is on record for stating that he wanted this journalist silenced. The Crown Prince ordered that they lay a trap for Khashoggi in Turkey. The Crown Prince sent fifteen members of his personal security detail to Turkey to murder him, including a doctor equipped with a bones saw to oversee the dismembering of his corpse, and a man who played as a body-double posing as Khashoggi, wandering around Istanbul in the murdered man’s clothes, after the killing had been done.

“Blame it on the world,” the fake President said, “the world is a nasty vicious place.”

I know that the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia is nasty and vicious. T-Rump is nasty and timid, he is a coward, but he delights in the viciousness of others, that much is clear.

The CIA, and numerous other intelligence agencies around the world, among our allies have reviewed the evidence of this murder provided to them by the Government of Turkey, they have authenticated it and concluded the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia is responsible for ordering Mr. Khashoggi’s murder.

T-Rump has opted to take the word of the murderer instead, accepting his denials, even though they were preceded by numerous other lies, which the Crown Prince walked back, he accepted those denials for some murky reason we have yet to discern.

It is reminiscent of his acceptance of Vladimir Putin’s lies and denials about interfering with the 2016 election.

The fake President cannot help himself when he thinks there is a dollar to be made, and he is hungry for those dollars.

“Nature is red in tooth and claw,” Saint Augustine said.

Thomas Hobbes wrote his seminal work Leviathan, as a reflection on this premise. “We live in a Hobbesian World,” Thomas Jefferson wrote, and that is why the founders took such pains to draft our constitutions with its extensive system of checks and balances in place..

The recognition of this reality is not a cause to excuse it. Rather, the recognition of this reality is what requires us to adhere to the dictates of our social compact. It is why we need a government derived from the consent of the governed, and this is the principle motivation behind the American experiment in self-government.

Without this social compact the strong will always tyrannize the weak, in keeping with the nature of the world, as a nasty vicious place. We cannot allow this to be the way of our world. We cannot look away from the face of brutality. We cannot excuse the tyrant.

It is the duty of the American President, of whoever holds that office, their legitimacy notwithstanding, to represent the American ideals to the world. We cannot abandon American principles for cheaper oil, for an arms contract, for a fistful of dollars, or a pocketful of lies.

Thanksgiving, the Via Negativa

Today is Thanksgiving.

Thanksgiving is a secular holiday, but nevertheless it is sacred to most Americans.

Many of us write reflections on this day, post memes, expressing to the world the things that we are thankful for.

That is nice.

It is conscientious, it is appropriate. We have much to be thankful for as Americans, and we should never forget it.

A heartfelt expression of gratitude is always welcome, even gratitude expressed in general for the many things we receive from those we love, by whom we are loved, for the things we are given that make our lives more comfortable, more challenging and more meaningful.

It is never inappropriate to thankful.

To express gratitude is to make one’s self humble; it is to acknowledge our reliance on others for making us into the people we have become.

Be humble.

Be gracious.

Be thankful.

Always, be these and you will be in the way of the wise.

In theology there is something known as the apophatic tradition. In this tradition it is understood that God, by whatever name you call the creator the universe (of all that is and all we are), that God dwells in a mode beyond human understanding.

God is shrouded in mystery, in the cloud of un-knowing.

According to the apophatic tradition, we are not able speak in the affirmative about what or who God is, because God, the eternal and infinite, God will not be circumscribed by finite constructs of human thought and language.

There can be no positive assertions about the nature of the Divine, there is only the via negative, the way of understanding who God is by stating what God is not.

Following this tradition, I am in the custom of forgoing the traditional giving-of-thanks, even though I am truly grateful for my friends and compatriots, grateful for everyone in my life, for all of those who inspire me, and who are endlessly patient with me.

I will follow the via negative, the negative way, and express what I am not thankful for.

I am not thankful that there is no peace in the world,

In Yemen where the Saudia Arabia and Iran are fighting a proxy war, and hundreds of thousands of Children are on the brink of starvation.

In Palestine, where there is apartheid, where millions of people live in cities and towns that are in reality just prisons, and the walls of their homes are the walls of a jail.

In America, where we are divided by class, culture, color, by a pretender to the office of President.

I am not thankful for the dismal failures of our government in Puerto Rico, more than a year since it was devastated by a hurricane. Or the failures of civilization to address the deep problems related to climate change, that are destroying communities everywhere around the world, including the recent fires in California that have destroyed thousands of homes, and killed dozens of people.

I am not thankful for our failures of leadership.

I am not thankful for white supremacy, and domestic terrorism.

I am not thankful for terrorism anywhere. I am not thankful for the religious fundamentalism that drives it. I am thankful neither for the fear that spawns it, nor for the fear it generates

I am not thankful that there is hunger in our bountiful world. I am not thankful for the greed and the sloth, and the bad public policy that fosters it.

I am not thankful for willful ignorance, for anti-rational, anti-intellectual, demagoguery. I am not thankful for the cultural relativism that has promoted it, for anti-objectivism, for liars.

I am not thankful for Donald Trump. I am not thankful for my fellow Americans who voted for him, his allies in congress and anywhere who continue to support.

I am not thankful for the media outlets, the reporters, the editorialists who failed to take him seriously. I am not thankful that they abdicated their responsibilities as the gatekeepers of our society, as the so called 4th Estate, and allowed his criminal regime to hold the seat of power.

I am not thankful that they have not collectively figured out a way to redress their failures.

I am not thankful and ashamed everyday of his antics as the President of the United States. For his capitulation to murderous regimes, and strong-men anywhere who he thinks he can profit from at some future point beyond his presidency.

I am not thankful for his corruption of the rule of law.

I am not thankful for on-going continuous assault on the working class, the threats that are levied against the average citizen in the spheres of public policy like health care, and taxes.

I am not thankful for our government’s continuous assault on our population of immigrants and refugees.

I am not thankful for these things.

I am not thankful that there is so much more to add to this list.

I am not thankful for the shortsightedness of liberals and progressives who cannot stand united in the face of the social forces that threaten us all.

Did I say that I am not thankful for white supremacists? I did, but let me say it again…I am not thankful for them or their apologists, not their soft supporters or their ardent advocates. I am not thankful that they have a seat at the table in the administration of Donald J. Trump.

I am not thankful for that vile imposter, who stole the presidency with the aid of a foreign power, the Russians no-less.

I am not thankful for them.

Un-reality and the Fake President – Editorial, The Week in Review

Analysis, Commentary, Opinion

Un-reality and the Fake President

Power does not corrupt it merely attracts the corruptible.

~Frank Herbert, Dune

The current holder of the office of President of the United States is the unparalleled exemplar of this statement. All the little fish that circle around him, feeding off of him, they can’t hold a candle to the corruption in that peevish-little-orange-menace’s bile filled heart.

On Veteran’s Day, six days ago, T-Rump sat sulking in the residence of the of the White House. He did not visit any of the wounded veterans at Walter Reed, neither did the first lady, or anyone from his family.

Not one of the Trump’s went to Arlington Cemetery, to pay their respects to all of the people who are buried there, who gave their lives in our nation’s conflicts.

None of them ever served.

They couldn’t.

The Trumps do not have a modicum of selflessness about them.

T-Rump was sad that his trip to Paris was so poorly received. He spent the rest of the week whining about his bad press.

He lost a law suit with CNN concerning the freedom of the press, and exactly what authority the White House has to grant access to the media. As it turns out, the courts say that they have very little.

T-Rump appointed a man named Whitaker, to be the acting Attorney General of the United States. The appointment appears to be in contravention of protocol, of federal statues, and of the appointments clause of the Constitution itself.

T-Rump does not care.

He pretends to own the moniker of the Law and Order President, while he shortsightedly seeks to subvert the rule of law at every turn.

He does not think the laws of the United States should apply to him or his family, or anyone he chooses to exempt from it, a political ally, a financier, even a murderous Crown Prince from the House of Saud.

Some real critics have emerged against this charlatan from the conservative wing of American politics. They have called out the GOP for having turned itself into a cult of personality.

To win at any cost, has become the name of the game.

The acting Attorney General’s only qualification for the post appears to have been his public and vocal criticisms of the probe being led by Special Counsel Robert Muller, into the conspiracy to defraud the People of the United States, by Russia and a cadre of homegrown actors, many of which served on the T-Rump Campaign, and in his administration, and the obstruction of justice that followed.

The acting Attorney General auditioned for his role on several news outlets and in person, while he served as Attorney General Jeff Sessions Chief of Staff. He met with the Fake President many times, while they plotted this step.

Never mind the fact that his appointment to that office is illegal, never mind the fact that he has several conflicts of interest for which Justice Department protocol will require that he recuse himself. Never mind the fact that he served as a member of the board of directors for a company in Florida being investigate for financial fraud, for bilking senior citizens out of their retirement savings.

Power attracts the corruptible, like moths to the flame, and the biggest flame of them all is the orange tyrant living in the White House.

Guilty – Editorial, The Week in Review

Guilty

This week in the national soap opera…

Listen…I am not a lawyer, and this is not a courtroom.

I am just a guy with an opinion.

I am not a news anchor, I do not work for a media outlet, I simply try to put a little thought every week into summarizing my point of view.

In this forum, T-Rump does not have a right to the presumption of innocence, he is obviously guilty as hell.

In this forum what is obvious does not have to be subordinated to some abstract standard of journalistic ethics. Let me tell you, those standards have long since ceased to serve their purpose. Standards of that type have become meaningless in light of the fact that one side of our political spectrum refuses to adhere to any standard of truth, reasonable standards of evidence and proofs, evidence, or scientific inquiry.

We have to just tell it like it is, and here I the thing that is on my mind. I hear the talking heads ask these question all the time, they ask it as if they were simple.

What do you think Russia has on the T-Rump?

Do you think he has been compromised?

What do you think it is?

Here is the answer: Donald Trump conspired with the Russians, with Vladimir Putin, to influence the 2016 election.

Donald Trump is guilty of treason. That is what the Russians have over him, and probably a great deal more embarrassing non-sense, but none of that embarrassing non-sense really matters to T-Rump, he is singularly incapable of embarrassment.

If it were just a matter of them having dirt on him for financial mis-dealings, or tapes of him with prostitutes, T-Rump would not care, neither would his supporters. If that were all there was, he would get himself out from under their thumb, he would let it fly and let come what may.
T-Rump is guilty of treason, he conspired with a foreign power to win the presidency in 2016. Not his sons, not his daughter, not Jared Kushner or other people close to him, though they are all guilty too, of that I am sure. T-Rump himself was involved at the highest level, and that is the dirt that they have on him.

Donald T-Rump is guilty of treason. He has been compromised, before and after, and since the election, he is doing the bidding of Vladimir Putin.

That is what it is.

Hurry Up and Wait – Editorial, The Week in Review

Hurry Up and Wait

Hurry up and wait, I learned that phrase when I was in the Navy, in boot camp, where every day was an exercise in patience, standing in long-lines for breakfast, lunch and dinner, and every other little thing we had to do.

Hurry up and wait.

This is the phrase that guides my feelings about the T-Rump administration, and every single one of the social and cultural disasters that are stemming from it.

Hurry up and wait, it will come to end, but America will be different when it is over, and the world.

Perhaps the change is only superficial, it would be hard to disagree with that, T-Rump just pulled away the veneer, lifted the veil, pulled the curtain to reveal the ugly face of America….but it more than that, he has empowered the vile and the hateful, he has normalized corruption and ignorance, deceit and divisiveness.

It cannot be over soon enough, I am afraid we will never recover.

We needed that veneer of polite society, the veil of political correctness, we needed the ugly face of America to remain hidden behind the curtain.

No-one benefits from our ugly nakedness, not even the ugly.

Allowing the hateful to lavish in their hatred does not help them. It does no-one any good to let the ignorant remain ignorant, we must teach them. We will never stop corruption, but we cannot let it pass.

We must call a lie a lie and never let it stand for truth. It is our duty; as citizens, and patriots, as human beings.

Hurry up and wait, there is an election coming. Go out and vote, vote for people who will stand against this self-indulgent, criminal regime.

We must take our country back!

We want justice, we are going to have to wait for it, but do not lose sight of it. Justice delayed is not justice denied, it is justice delayed,

Justice will catch up with T-Rump and his corrupt administration, with every single one of his enablers in government, in congress, in the courts, and when it does, justice will be had.

Twelve more Russians indicted yesterday, with clear evidence of collusion being presented in the filings, collusion, coordination, and corruption with the Kremlin, by an American president.

Watch out T-Rump, you are gonna be got.

Regrets – Editorial, The Week in Review

Regrets

I spent the last half of this week listening to the leaders and spokespeople for the Democratic Party talk at length about their plans to try and stop the appointment of the next Supreme Court Justice by Donald Trump.

It is nauseating.

The prospect of this illegitimate president appointment a second justice is nauseating.

The lack of unity on the left is even more nauseating.

This, and all of the rest of the social and political travesties that have been perpetrated on the American people are what happens when liberals and progressives fall apart and fall away from each other because the favorite causes of one group are at odds with the favorite causes of another group and any talk of compromise is treated as a betrayal of a person’s core values.

The Supreme Court was on the ballot in 2016, but Bernie Sanders’s and his supporters would not relent. Even after Bernie endorsed the Clinton candidacy a good number of his supporters, ran into the trap that had been laid out for them by Vladimir Putin’s puppet leftist, Jill Stein.

It was sickening.

The Supreme Court was on the Ballot then. The republican majority in the senate were refusing to even give President Obama’s pick to fill the vacancy a hearing, let alone take a vote, and they got away with it.

The senate denied President Obama’s candidate. Trump got elected, he appointed an arch-conservative to the court, and he is about to do it again.

It is nauseating, to listen to pundits on the left, office holders and activists pretend like the standard which the Republican majority leader in the Senate, Mitch Mc Connell, used to justify his refusal to give President Obama’s candidate a vote, to pretend that they should be able to hold Mitch Mc Connell to that standard now; no appoints to the Supreme Court in an election year.

I have some news for them, they should shut their mouths.

Mitch Mc Connell has zero credibility, no intellectual honesty, we cannot expect fairness or consistency from him on anything. The only principle he will adhere to is the principle of doing the bidding of his masters. It is the only reason he holds the position he holds.

Mitch Mc Connell hates the American people, hates our democratic institutions, hates America, he is a feckless villain, who has ceded the power of his office and the authority of the Senate to a man who is willing to destroy the country for the satisfaction of his vanity, and his all-cosuming greed.

To all my liberal friends who are crying now, if you are in that group that only ever offered tepid support to Hillary Clinton. If you cried and whined, about having to compromise your values at the voting booth. If you pushed stories from Russian Bots and Trolls against her candidacy. If you did not vote at all, or if you voted for Stein, then I am sad for you in this moment, because I am sad for what this moment means to our country…but really, this is your nightmare.

Do not tell me that Hillary lost because she ran a terrible campaign…I do not want to hear that. She did, so what. She is a terrible campaigner, but she was a good policy wonk, her candidacy was never about her personality, it was based on her ability to be an effective administrator…and oh, by the way, she won the popular vote, she won more votes than any other candidate in history.

Take a look at the Republicans and the right wing of the American electorate. They are in the minority, there are fewer of them than there are of us, by they are unified, they march in lock step, and that is why they win.

If we cannot learn from that, organize and get out the vote, compromise and push our agenda forward, then we get what we get: a criminal regime, the destruction of the international order, the ruination of the country and the degradation of the constitution.
